Federal Government Introduces Chinese Language into Nigeria’s Senior Secondary School Curriculum
Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved the inclusion of Chinese language as a subject in the senior secondary school curriculum. This decision marks a historic milestone in Nigeria–China relations and demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening education while preparing students for opportunities in a globalized world.

Announcing the development, the Ministry of Education stated that the move aligns with Nigeria’s long-term strategy to diversify language learning, equip students with relevant global skills, and foster closer ties with international partners.
The addition of Chinese language to the curriculum is expected to:
-
Enhance career and academic opportunities for Nigerian students, including scholarships and international exchange programs.
-
Support Nigeria’s growing economic and diplomatic engagement with China.
-
Promote cultural understanding between the people of both nations.
While acknowledging that challenges such as teacher training and curriculum integration remain, the Ministry emphasized that collaborative efforts with institutions like the Confucius Institute and other Chinese educational partners will ensure effective implementation.
“This is not just about teaching a new language,” the statement read. “It is about preparing the next generation of Nigerians to thrive in a world where communication, collaboration, and cultural understanding are vital to success.”
The Federal Government calls on stakeholders in the education sector, parents, and students to embrace this development as Nigeria continues to position its youth for leadership in the global community.
