Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has publicly cautioned that bandits who have committed mass killings and mass kidnappings should not be granted the legitimacy of dialogue. According to Gumi, negotiating or offering concessions to perpetrators of large-scale violence risks encouraging further criminality and deepening the country’s insecurity problems. He urged authorities and the public to consider the message that rewarding violent actors sends to communities already suffering from repeated attacks.
